Field Trip #1: Waterfalls & Birds
Saturday, October 15, 8 am to 12 pm
1: Waterfall (off of Waterdown Road)
Directions: Take QEW or 407 west to 403 west towards Hamilton. Take first exit to Waterdown Road and turn right towards the town of Waterdown. Follow this road for a kilometer or two. As you get almost into the town you will see a railroad bridge. There is a small parking area to your left before the bridge. Park there. The waterfalls are a short hike down a moderately steep trail.
Equipment: Camera, tripod. Good hiking shoes. Dress for the weather!
Time: About 1 hour
2: LaSalle Marina/ Park
Take Waterdown Road towards 403 and keep going until it ends in LaSalle Park.
Tim Horton Break Time: On the way to LaSalle we will make a quick 15 minute stop at Tim Horton’s. After you cross 403 you will come to a major intersection. This is Plains Road. Make a left turn. Tim Horton’s is a very short drive on Plains Road. It will be on your right.
Equipment: Camera, tripod, long lens. Swans and waterfowl.
Time: About an hour and a half with coffee break and drive time considered.
3: Burlington Lift Bridge
Leave LaSalle Park and follow road back to first 4 way stop. This is N. Shore Blvd. Turn right on this road and follow it until you are almost at QEW. Take ramp to QEW Niagara but stay on right lane as you will be exiting almost immediately onto East Port Drive. Take East Port drive until you cross over the lift bridge. Parking will be on your left.
Equipment: Camera, tripod, long lens. Peregrine Falcon, waterfowl, waves
Time: About 1 hour including drive time
4. Redhill Ponds
Note: we will visit here only if time allows. Take East Port drive towards Hamilton. You will go by some open water and then a series of large buildings on your left. When the building end (I think was is an RV dealer) you will find a small opening that leads into a small parking area, from there we will walk about a kilometer on the trails looking for birds.
Equipment: Camera, tripod, long lens. Peregrine Falcon, waterfowl, waves
Time: About 1 hour to an hour and a half including drive time
Field Trip #2 Toronto Zoo
Saturday October 29: 9:30-1:30
Meet at the zoo parking lot by 9:20. I will be there by the “globe”. You may bring as many guests as you like but I must know by Monday, October 17 in order to arrange for admittance as the special group rate. Please email with numbers at education@theriverwoodconservancy.org. The fee is $10 per person and you must have that amount in cash for all members of your group.
On the day I must know how many people and how many cars we have as I will be given tokens for the toll gates. I do not believe there will be any parking fees.
Once in the zoo I would prefer that class members stay with me and their families go off on their own at least for the first hour to hour and a half. Typically what happens is after that time I’ve lost the group as students become intent on doing their own thing. I will circulate around and work with individuals but you are welcome to reconnect with your families.
Directions: 401 to Meadowvale Road, follow signs to Toronto Zoo (north)
