Black Bears: A Natural History
In 2006 Fitzhenry and Whiteside published the first edition Black Bears: A Natural History. I was very pleased with that book but my adventures with black bears did not end with it. I continued to seek the species out and photograph and study it. As my library of images (and later videos) grew so too did my knowledge of black bears. For one thing their numbers continued to increase. Bear management plans changed as well and it became easier to see bears in many parts of the country.
As a result of all of this I was pleased beyond words to be asked to do a second edition by the publisher. This new book is completely updated with many new images and a lot of new information.
It is my hope that this book will help promote a better understanding of these magnificent animals in the public's consciousness.
From the back cover:
Author Dave Taylor has spent his life photographing and writing about North American wildlife. His passion was black bears. In this beautifully designed full colour book with more than 100 full color photographs, maps and charts, Black Bears introduces the reader to this shy, reclusive and largely misunderstood animal with an encyclopedic examination of the black bear's world by state, province and territory.
Of the three species (the grizzly/brown bear, polar bear, and black bear), Taylor examines and portrays his devotion specifically to the black bear, the most populous of the species. A specific section touches upon the bear and people, offering valuable advice when camping in their environment, and what to do if one encounters a bear in the wilderness. This book is about black bears and it hopefully provides the reader with the information they need to enjoy being in black bear country. He has also been a freelance writer on wildlife and ecology for a number of magazines including Bears Magazine, Bob Izumi's Real Fishing, Canadian Wildlife, Seasons, Ontario Out of Doors, Halcyon and many others.

I am particularly grateful to Lynn Rogers (Ph.D.) for reviewing the book and passing on his comments. They proved most helpful. His North American Bear Center is one of the few "museums" to focus on black bears in North America. Educators will find great resources there to help them incorporate black bears into their curriculums.
